ABOUT THE ROLE
As a Firmware Engineer , you own a firmware module end-to-end — from requirement through design, implementation and verification to the evidence that supports release — on low-power, connected medical devices.
You work independently within the project context: you decompose your own scope, manage its dependencies and integration points, re-plan when inputs change, and communicate the impact. Your design decisions and your judgment on trade-offs shape how the module behaves in the field, and you are expected to defend them with evidence.
You also raise the level of the engineers around you through review and mentoring in your area, and you may act as lead developer on a focused scope .
I. JOB DESCRIPTION
· Design firmware modules and complex features for 32-bit ARM Cortex-M based medical devices, and explain the trade-offs behind your design — power, memory, timing, testability, maintainability and integration impact.
· Work independently across several firmware areas — device drivers and HAL, RTOS and concurrency, low-power operation, peripheral and sensor acquisition, BLE or cellular connectivity, bootloader/DFU — with clear depth in at least one of them.
· Avoid designs that make verification or traceability harder than they need to be.
· Build the tooling your work requires: scripts and utilities for debugging, test automation, protocol validation and data analysis.
· Decompose a feature or module into a sensible task sequence, estimate it with its assumptions and dependencies, and own it from requirement to release.
· Manage dependencies, integration points, regression scope and release evidence within your module.
· Re-plan and communicate impact when requirements, dependencies or schedules change.
· Investigate complex module and integration defects to root cause rather than patching symptoms.
· Analyse logs, measurements, sensor data and protocol traces, and instrument the system where the existing data is not enough to narrow down the cause.
· Define a regression scope proportionate to the change, and drive actions that prevent the defect from recurring.
· Own the lifecycle artifacts of your module under our medical-device quality system: requirement, design, verification and anomaly records, linked with full traceability.
· Perform impact analysis and risk analysis for the changes you make, and prepare evidence that is complete enough to pass review and release.
· Co-design interfaces, protocols and test approaches with Hardware, Mobile/Cloud and QA/V&V engineers; review schematics and test cases within your area of understanding.
· Resolve technical disagreement with evidence, and pull in the right people when an issue crosses a boundary you don't own.
· Review and mentor less experienced engineers in your area, and improve how the team works — not just your own output.
· Write documentation that is complete, aimed at the right audience and needs little rework: technical decisions, design rationale, impact and issue analysis, in English.
II. QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE
Must have
· Bachelor's degree in Computer/Electronics/Electrical/Mechatronics Engineering, Embedded Systems, Computer Science or a related field.
· At least 3 years of hands-on embedded firmware development on 32-bit ARM Cortex-M microcontrollers.
· Strong Embedded C , with solid command of data structures, algorithms and concurrent programming.
· Proven depth in at least one of : device driver and HAL design, RTOS and concurrency, low-power design, BLE or cellular IoT, sensor acquisition, bootloader/DFU.
· Track record of owning a feature or module through a full cycle — requirement, design, implementation, verification and release evidence.
· Hands-on experience with at least one connectivity stack used in connected devices: BLE or cellular IoT (GSM/LTE-M/NB-IoT).
· Ability to debug from data : logs, debugger, measurement equipment, protocol traces and targeted test cases, through to root cause and a justified regression scope.
· Practical experience with UART, SPI, I2C and USB, and the ability to read and reason about a schematic.
· Python scripting for tooling : log analysis, test automation, protocol validation and data processing.
· Proficiency with compilers, debuggers and IDEs (KEIL, IAR, GCC, JTAG/GDB), version control (Git) and issue tracking (JIRA).
· Ability to scope and estimate development effort , including assumptions, dependencies and open items.
· Strong English reading and writing for technical documentation and cross-team communication.
· Fluent spoken English for customer-facing scope , on-site support and technical lead assignments.
· Ability to work within a documented, controlled development process and to produce accurate, traceable records.
· Strong technical writing and clear presentation: design rationale, technical decisions and issue analysis that need little rework, and the ability to defend them with evidence.
Nice to have
· Experience with medical-device software development under IEC 62304, ISO 13485 or ISO 14971, or with another regulated or safety-critical development process.
· Applied understanding of cryptography: symmetric/asymmetric encryption, hashing, signatures, certificates, and secure boot or secure firmware update.
· Experience with IoT data protocols (MQTT, HTTP, CoAP) or additional network stacks (Wi-Fi, Zigbee, LoRaWAN).
· Object-oriented programming , in C++ or another language, applied to embedded systems.
· Signal-processing integration on MCU — filtering and biosignal pipelines.
· Experience with manufacturing and calibration support , or with production and field issue investigation.
· Effective use of AI-assisted engineering tools , with disciplined review of the output.
