Senior NestJS Developer (Backend)

Job Description

We are seeking a highly skilled and communicative Senior NestJS Developer to join our dedicated team in Vietnam. 

 

You will work closely with our existing Senior NestJS Developer and DevOps lead on the re-architecture and upgrade of a major client’s backend API. This role is highly impactful, focusing on migrating a legacy serverless backend to a modern, secure, and highly performant managed hosting architecture while delivering critical functional and compliance improvements.

 

Key Responsibilities

• Architecture and Code Quality: Maintain high standards of code quality and apply architectural best practices, including SOLID and DRY principles. Use advanced NestJS patterns, comprehensive testing—including unit, integration, and end-to-end tests—and test-driven development (TDD).
• Data-Layer Optimisation: Maintain and extend complex database integrations using an ORM such as TypeORM or Prisma with relational databases, including SQL Server and PostgreSQL.
• Identity and Security: Integrate APIs with OAuth 2.0 and OpenID Connect (OIDC) identity providers, including token validation, custom policy implementation, and claims mapping.
• Data Privacy and Compliance: Implement data-handling capabilities—including anonymisation, telemetry suppression, personally identifiable information (PII) management, and data-residency controls—to meet rigorous client compliance requirements.
• Observability and Telemetry: Build and maintain structured, privacy-safe logging, monitoring, and distributed tracing systems for application errors, security events, and access to sensitive data.
• Performance Engineering: Diagnose and resolve backend performance bottlenecks, optimise database queries, maintain fast API response times, and ensure graceful scalability under peak loads.
• API Documentation: Maintain comprehensive and accurate Swagger/OpenAPI documentation for all existing and new endpoints.
• Cross-Functional Collaboration: Work closely with the DevOps Lead to adapt application code and configuration across multiple environments. Provide accurate effort estimates, clearly communicate technical risks, and deliver progress updates during client meetings.

 

Your Skills and Experience

Required Skills and Experience

• Advanced Backend Development: At least five years of backend development experience, with deep and demonstrable expertise in Node.js, TypeScript, and the NestJS ecosystem, including interceptors, guards, pipes, middleware, and custom decorators.
• Fluent Communication: Excellent written and spoken English is essential for daily strategic discussions with clients and onshore teams.
• Technical Leadership : Demonstrated experience leading or mentoring other developers - owning solution design and architecture decisions, unblocking teammates on complex problems, and acting as primary technical/communication bridge for team members less fluent in English.
• Agency Experience : Prior experience working in a software agency or consultant, comfortable representing the team directly to stakeholders and managing expectations independently.
• System Architecture: A proven track record in backend re-platforming, complex system design, or hosting migrations, such as moving from serverless infrastructure to managed cloud hosting.
• Data-Access Expertise: Extensive experience with ORMs, relational databases, database modelling, and raw SQL query optimisation.
• Identity Management: Hands-on experience integrating OAuth 2.0/OIDC identity providers, such as Azure AD B2C, Microsoft Entra External ID, Auth0, Okta, or Keycloak.
• Observability Tools: Strong experience with application performance monitoring (APM), distributed tracing, and structured logging tools, such as Azure Application Insights, Datadog, or New Relic.
• Cloud Proficiency: Practical experience deploying and operating applications on a major cloud platform, preferably Microsoft Azure.
• Agile Delivery and Version Control: Advanced knowledge of Git workflows and experience working within Agile software delivery environments.

 

Desirable Skills and Experience

• Regulatory Compliance: Hands-on experience working in highly regulated or data-sensitive environments, particularly with regional data-residency requirements and privacy legislation.
• Network Security: Working knowledge of private networking, cloud edge security, web application firewalls (WAFs), and related security controls.
• Containerisation: Proficiency with Docker and Docker Compose for consistent local development, integration testing, and troubleshooting.
• CI/CD Pipelines: Experience working with build, release, and deployment tools such as Octopus Deploy, Azure DevOps Pipelines, or GitHub Actions.
• Azure DevOps: Familiarity with Azure DevOps for project and work tracking, including Boards, work items, backlogs, and sprints.
